Description

Greg Irons Roller-Coaster Portraits Original Art (1970s). Self-taught as an artist since childhood, Irons came to the Underground Comix scene in a roundabout way, starting with rock-band promotions in San Francisco and an interest in tattooing, a specialty that eventually became a late-in-life career path. A comic-book breakthrough in 1970, with Slow Death #1, established Irons as a taboo-busting pacesetter in a class with the likes of Robert Crumb and S. Clay Wilson, and his development of the Skull horror series established a link between the Underground movement and the historical influences of EC Comics and author H.P. Lovecraft. The present selection, a cryptic exercise in surrealistic symmetry, is a striking representation of the artist's painstaking sense of design. No publishing pedigree is documented. Ink over blue pencil on Bristol board. Image area, 14" x 22". Very Good condition, with moderate toning/handling and a torn area in upper-left margin.
