George Herriman Krazy Kat, Offissa Pupp, and Ignatz Mouse Color Specialty Illustration Original Art (c. 1932). This wonderful painting was made as a gift for Ernest Pascal, Herriman's son-in-law, and as a treasured masterpiece, it has remained in the Herriman family ever since -- having never been offered on the market -- until now. The image of the three main characters from the strip in front of a breathtaking Coconino County landscape encompasses all the best and most desirable elements of the beloved strip and it's absolutely one of the best color Krazy Kat pieces we've ever seen. George Herriman started his stellar cartooning career in 1901, working for numerous weeklies, and he eventually joined the New York World (arguably the most important newspaper in America). If ever a comic strip was to be acknowledged as being "Art-with-a-capital-A," his immortal classic, Krazy Kat, is certainly one of the few candidates for such a lofty honor. A unique amalgam of humor, poetry, line, tone, and color, this superb, large, full color specialty illustration, with its hallmark Southwestern landscape and expressive Herriman linework is almost certainly the ne plus ultra of his specialty pieces. This piece was reproduced in color on page 71 of Patrick McDonnell's Krazy Kat: The Comic Art of George Herriman (Abrams, 1986). This ink, graphite, white gouache, and watercolor masterwork has an approximate image area of 22" x 20". This huge matted masterpiece is housed in its original 35" x 32" frame, which was created and hand-painted by Herriman himself, and thus, makes for an incredible presentation. In Excellent condition, and lovingly inscribed (faded), "To "Ernest" from Ole Man Herriman" at the bottom center of the image.
