Description
George Barr Red Nails Original Art (Donald M. Grant/Gnome Press, 1975). Barr captures the spirit and the letter of Robert E. Howard's last tale of Conan the Cimmerian. The story dates from 1936 (Weird Tales magazine) and had been reprinted twice before Grant gave it a showcase edition, with Barr's splendid artwork. This key scene involves the villainous Olmec's attempt to force himself on Valeria, Conan's traveling companion, and his interruption by the sorceress Tascela. Barr's delicately crosshatched pen-stroke technique is reminiscent of such earlier master illustrators as Virgil Finlay and Roy G. Krenkel. Ink over graphite on Bristol board, with painted white highlighting. Image area, 6.5" x 10". Excellent condition. From the Ethan Roberts Estate Collection.More information about George Barr.
