Description

Gardner Rea Judge Illustration Original Art (Judge, 1937). A very large showcase for Rea's boisterous delicacy. The artist titled this Depression-specific satire as "The Revolt of the Upper Classes: The Up-Flare!" -- a pageant of anarchic deeds by top-hatted big shots and snooty matrons, taunting the police, terrorizing laborers, and so forth. Brilliant stuff, here, in an Art Nouveau style such as few cartoonists have mastered. The title appears in the artist's hand at lower margin. A tearsheet of the published page is affixed to reverse. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 13.5" x 20". Age toning, marginal staining and tearing. Good condition.
