Frederic Rodrigo Gruger The Saturday Evening Post Original Art (Curtis Publ., c. 1920s). Gruger, prolific and brilliant, was a frequent contributor to The SatEvePost, which employed his artistry to illuminate fiction from many authors. Surviving Grugers from this period usually show a date and a title in handwriting on the reverse, but this one poses a mystery: The handwriting reads, "Unidentified," and shows a page number -- but the only formal documentation is a statement establishing the magazine as owner of the artwork. A lovely, melancholy scene, rich in Gruger's customary richness of characterization. The artist's signature is larger (broader) than usual. Wide-point carpentry pencil and charcoal, with wet-brush (water) retouching and highlights created by fingertip smudging and rubbing with the metal heel of the brush. Image area, 14" x 12". Age-toned and barked about the edges, with two corners chipped. Good condition.
