Frederic Rodrigo Gruger Couple in Shadowy Room Original Art (c. 1920s). Gruger's mastery of lighting effects not only kept him busy on the magazine-fiction scene -- but also inspired such Hollywood camera stylists as Gregg Toland (of Citizen Kane) and Nick Musuraca (of Cat People) to use dim-lighted areas to cause a viewer to imagine details that were not explicitly shown. Here is one of Gruger's more emphatic black-patch drawings, dominated by a textured, shadowy area of mystery and perhaps even menace. The publishing pedigree is not documented; the strokes suggest his customary approach to assignments from The Saturday Evening Post. Wide-point carpentry pencil and charcoal, with wet-brush (water) retouching and highlights created by fingertip smudging and rubbing with the metal heel of the brush. Image area, 12" x 16". Age-toned and barked about the edges, with chipped corners. Good condition.
