Description

Frank Frazetta Kubla Khan Portfolio Plate #3 Illustration Original Art (1975). "And 'mid this tumult Kubla heard from far / Ancestral voices prophesying war!" Frank Frazetta, the master of fantasy illustration, drew his inspiration from Samuel Taylor Coleridge's poem Kubla Khan (1797), based on the Mongol emperor who founded the Chinese Yuan dynasty. Make no mistake, this exceptional original is not a preliminary, but the original, published two years later in 1977 in the limited portfolio entitled Kubla Khan, published by Frazetta Prints. The piece was later reprinted as the front and back wraparound inside covers of one of Frazetta's biggest and best artbooks, Testament: The Life and Art of Frank Frazetta (2001). It was also published in the Completion of Kubla Khan as a double-page spread by Julio Delatorre.
What more is there to say about Frazetta's art -- it's fantastic in every sense of the word -- elaborate (the brushstroke here is just exceptional), dynamic... so many adjectives apply to this featured illustration that would be suited perfectly in the palace of Xanadu! Ink on Bristol paper with a wide image area of 18.5" x 14". Drawn on a portfolio board depicting a printed visual of Buck Rogers on the other side. Light soiling along the edges, minor handling wear, and small spots. Signed and dated in the image area. In Excellent condition.
