Description

Edgar Church Oriental Cafe Original Decorative Advertisement (1945). The client, a Chinese restaurateur in El Paso, Texas, wanted many words in a tiny space. Designer Church rose to the occasion with a layout that still attracts the eye while working all those words into the art. Lovely to behold, largely because of Church's affinity for comic-book art. (He also compiled the legendary Mile High Collection of first-generation funnybooks.) Ink over graphite on Bristol board, with type-collage elements. Image area, 4" x 7.5". Faint toning. Excellent condition.
