E.A. Bushnell Trouble Can Wait Original Editorial Art (Central Press Association, 1919). Even Uncle Sam drops everything to take in the World Series of Baseball. Bushnell may or may not have intended for Uncle Sam's "U.S. Bag of Troubles" to suggest an old-fashioned Whoopee Cushion, an inflatable bladder that, when sat upon, emitted a flatulent burst of air. That is the visual effect, nonetheless. (Never mind that the JEM Rubber Co. of Canada would not introduce the official Whoopee Cushion until 1920 -- such homemade devices had been used by practical jokers since Ancient Rome.) Bushnell inventories such generic problems as politics and labor strikes in addition to tensions with the League of Nations and the ever-worrisome H.C.L., or high cost of living. This fine radial composition measures a whopping 15.5" x 18'. Graphite on thin textured bond. A plastic spray-coating has minimized smudging, but at the sacrifice of brittleness in the page-stock. Moderate age-toning, with a 2.5" tear and creasing at upper edge. Good condition. From the Jack Kent Collection.
