Description
David Wright Game and Set Pin-Up Painting Illustration Original Art (1957). She serves a coy glance that says the match is already decided -- game, set, and she knows it. "Lovelies" like this made Dudley Wright a WWII-era sensation, turning up by the hundreds as morale-boosting staples in bases, barracks, and clubs across Britain, with much of his pin-up work appearing in the illustrated weekly The Sketch through the 1940s-50s. This painting bears Wright's commercial "DW" signature, is titled Game and Set on the reverse, and is dated April 1957 on the verso. It's also stamped by Rogers & Co. Artists' Agents Ltd., the major London illustration agency that represented Wright for magazine placements and was closely tied to The Sketch and the Illustrated London News. Given the tasteful presentation and agency stamp, it was likely prepared for publication in The Sketch or a similarly restrained periodical. Created in gouache over graphite on illustration board with an end-to-end image area of 11.5" x 14.75". Faint hint of spot staining. Signed by Wright in the lower right.
