Description
David Mazzucchelli Daredevil: Born Again "Apocalypse" Promotional Poster Illustration Original Art (Marvel, 1985). The tattered remains of the Man Without Fear's costume lie bare in his hands, a stark and sobering image of the ordeal Matt Murdock is about to endure. It asks, with brutal simplicity, what remains when your identity, reputation, home, and sense of self are stripped away piece by piece. This large illustration was used for a poster promoting "Apocalypse," the first chapter of the storyline that would become Daredevil: Born Again, and would have been seen hanging in comic shops at the time.Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli's "Born Again" stands as one of the towering Marvel storylines of the 1980s, a brutal, noir-inflected descent in which the Kingpin destroys Matt Murdock's life, only to learn that breaking the man is not the same as killing the hero. Published in Daredevil #227-233, the arc redefined Daredevil through faith, ruin, and resurrection, with Mazzucchelli's stark, cinematic artwork helping turn Matt's collapse and rebirth into one of the most influential superhero stories ever published. Its shadow has stretched well beyond comics, informing season 3 of Netflix's Daredevil and lending its title to Marvel Studios' later Daredevil: Born Again series.
