Description
Dave Gibbons Watchmen Doctor Manhattan Portfolio and Promotional Illustration Original Art (DC, 1986). Doctor Manhattan sits in quiet meditation before a dense array of industrial machinery, his figure dwarfed by the overwhelming scale. "Who Watches the Watchmen?" is scrawled across a concrete block, confronting the viewer with an immediate sense of unease. Originally published in Comics Buyer's Guide ahead of the legendary series' release. The image was also used in Watchmen Portfolio and inspired one of the movie poster teasers. This perspective-driven illustration of the blue-skinned being of omnipotence offered fans a first look at the saga to come. It was later included as one of the plates in a rare Watchmen portfolio released in France in 1987, the same year the series concluded. This piece exemplifies DC's shift toward mature, creator-driven storytelling in the mid-1980s and positioned Watchmen as more than just a comic. It presented the work as a provocative statement about power, surveillance, and moral uncertainty during a pivotal moment in comics history. Created in ink over blue pencil on DC Bristol board with an image area of 7.5" x 15.5". Signed by Gibbons in the lower margin. Includes a photo of Jim Valentino and Dave Gibbons holding the artwork, signed and dated by Valentino. In Excellent condition.From the Jim Valentino Collection.
