Clarence "Cad" Brand Sports Montage Original Art (The Milwaukee Sentinel, c. 1910s). A wild, large-scale fantasia of sporting-cartoon panels, courtesy of the brilliant pioneer Brand, at a peak of sarcastic humor. The centerpiece razzes Henry "Heinie" Zimmerman, a baseball infielder who became notorious for game-fixing bribery. Additional panels recognize Milwaukee bowling champ Bill Reed; boxer Freddie Welsh's title loss to Benny Leonard in 1917; Panamanian boxer Kid Norfolk's 1917 win over Billy Miske; and White Sox knuckleball pitcher and game-fixer Eddie Cicotte's denial of the controversial "shine ball" throwing technique. Severe staining and edge deterioration mars the art but cannot detract from the ferocity of Brand's commentary. The Welsh panel is pasted in place. Moisture stains and heavy age-toning. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 22" x 15", framed to 24.25" x 17". The frame appears to be as old as the art. Fair condition.
