Description

Bill (Will) Elder Humbug #5 "Evolution in Publishing" Illustration Original Art (Humbug Publications, 1957). After Harvey Kurtzman was drubbed out of MAD, he and Bill Elder bounced around with a several attempts at rekindling the old magic, leading to Trump and later, Humbug, a labor-of-love project that let them work at their own pace and take aim at other beloved institutions like the Fourth Estate, specifically, the descent into sensationalism, scandal, and rumormongering. Sound familiar? It's fair to say that Kurtzman and Elder (and their ilk) were ahead of their time, but it's more accurate to say there's nothing new under the sun. This strip of de-evolving readers from man to chimp was created in ink over graphite on illustration board with an image area of This piece has an image area of 2.75" x 11". Board is moderately toned with moderate edge and handling wear. Panel one is on Bristol board, pasted over the original image. Production tape in top margin. Whiteout touch-ups and production notes and glue residue in bottom margin. In Very Good condition.
