Description
Bill (Will) Elder Humbug #10 "Humbug's Gardening Guide" Feature Page 1 Illustration Original Art (Humbug Publications, 1958). Humbug was Harvey Kurtzman's post-MAD answer to the same question: how much satire can you cram into one "respectable" magazine, especially with Usual Gang ringers like "Wild Bill" Elder on hand. This page kicks off the "Home and Garden" satire in the form of a mock magazine guide, sincerely promising that by reading it "you will come to understand just what a rich experience and what a rewarding hobby stamp collecting is", because nothing says suburban bliss like getting licked by your hobby.Created in ink, wash, and white paint highlights on Bristol board mounted to an illustration board, with an overall image area of 13" x 13" (including stat title paste-ups). Three overlays are taped to the top margin, including two onion skins serving as protective overlays for an acetate overlay with inked artwork created to add a special effect to the final published page. The page presents with light toning, adhesive residue staining, missing text paste-ups at the bottom of the page, smudging/soiling, marginal production tape, marks, and pulled-tape abrasion, and corner/edge handling wear. The onion skin overlays show staining, tears, and toning. Signed by Elder in the lower right image area and in Very Good condition.
