Description
Bernie Wrightson - Four Cats Painting Illustration Original Art (c. 1966-67). Is it redundant to call these four vigilant cats menacing-looking? Perhaps -- but Wrightson gives them a distinctly sinister edge, and it's all in the eyes. Likely created just out of high school in the mid-to-late 1960s, this early piece captures the young artist sharpening the gothic instincts that would define his career. Apart from his newspaper assignments, much of Wrightson's developing work leaned toward fantasy and horror, inspired by the EC comics he devoured and the Famous Artists Course he completed by mail. Even here, the future Master of the Macabre's gift for atmosphere is already taking shape. Created in watercolor over graphite on watercolor board with an approximate image area of 14" x 16" (including signature). Toning, 0.75" tear in the center, staining at the bottom, tape residue staining, trimmed edges, and pinhole at the top edge.
