Description

Bernie Wrightson "Faithful Unto Death" Unpublished Illustration Original Art (1973). It's rare to come across an unfamiliar image from a master that carries such quiet emotional weight. Here, a dog stays faithful to the very end, collapsed beside an empty bowl and a lifeless owner in a scene that's equal parts horror and heartbreak. Created during Wrightson's peak period in the 1970s, when he was conjuring his gothic marvels for Swamp Thing, House of Mystery, and House of Secrets, the piece is steeped in shadow and sorrow. Though it appears to have gone unpublished, its heavy inks and mournful atmosphere make it a haunting testament to Wrightson's ability to find humanity even in horror. From 1968 to 1975, Wrightson shared living quarters with his Studio peers, including Jeff Jones and Michael Kaluta, where long, inspired drawing sessions often produced personal works like this one, intimate creations born in the quiet between deadlines. Created in ink over graphite on Bristol board with an approximate image area of 5.75" x 16". Toning, with heavier toning in the top half, staining on right edge, and light smudging. Signed and dated by Wrightson in the lower right. In Very Good condition.
