Bernie Wrightson Apparitions "Hanover Fiste" Portfolio Plate Original Art (Sal Q. Productions, 1978). During the mid to late 1970s, Bernie Wrightson was firing on all cylinders, creating astonishing artwork for comics and fantasy projects as stunning as anything ever seen in the field. For the oversized color portfolio Apparitions, the artist truly pulled out all the stops, showcasing all his masterful techniques in four color plates. Many longtime collectors believe this to be the absolute pinnacle of Wrightson's career -- the best color work he ever did, right along with Frankenstein, the best black and white art he ever created. None of the Apparitions art has come onto the market for many years, and this plate -- perhaps the best of the four -- has resided in a private collection for decades.
The artwork is rendered in color inks on illustration board, with an image area measuring 13" x 16.5". The caption is hand-written below: "Hanover Fiste is caught stealing chickens at the gentlemen farmers' commune -- 1897." The art is in Excellent condition, and includes an 18" x 22" mat.
We're incredibly happy to just see this long-hidden masterpiece in all its glory, much less to be offering it at auction. The linework, inking, and beautiful colors, which are as vivid and deep as the day Wrightson rendered them, are simply breathtaking, as is the intricate and dramatic composition. The detail in all aspects is astonishing -- this is an artwork that must be seen to be believed!

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
