Antonio Prohias El Mundo (Havana) Original Editorial Cartoon, pre-Spy vs. Spy (Govin Publ., 1959). A pivotal image in Prohias' transition from president of the Cuban Cartoonists Association to a star player at MAD. Hailed at first by revolutionist Fidel Castro for his digs at Cuba's previous regime, Prohias soon fell into disfavor for his criticisms of the new dictator's abuses. (This splendid composition pegs Castro's "new" Cuba as a pawn of Communist Russia and Nikita Khrushchev's warmongering intentions.) Which is how Prohias wound up as an exile in America, placing his Spy vs. Spy serial with MAD: "The sweetest revenge," he once said, "has been to turn Fidel's accusation of me as a spy into a moneymaking venture." Ink and Zipatone shading over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 12" x 16". Excellent condition.
