Albert Turner Reid Young Lincoln and the Press and One Other Artist Original Art Group of 2 (1900s). Though better known as a political cartoonist with a playful, humorous streak, Reid reserved a realistic touch as a historical illustrator. This environmental portrait of Abraham Lincoln, standing by in a print shop while a pressman checks a page-proof, might be termed a meeting of emancipators -- Lincoln and the free press. The artist's decorative signature makes a splendid garnish. The additional (unsigned) piece, depicting a dapper man, bespeaks the semi-finished work of a gifted amateur, perhaps influenced by James Montgomery Flagg. It is drawn on the reverse of a brittle political-campaign poster from 1909. The Reid is a pencil composition with water-wash (grey) finishing. The unsigned piece is entirely in graphite. Both show extensive staining and wrinkling, with chipping and marginal tearing on the latter. Image areas, 20" x 17" and 14" x 22". Fair to Good condition. From the Allan Holtz Collection.
