Al Kilgore Mr. Laurel and Mr. Hardy Cover Illustration and Sons of the Desert Logotype Original Art and Ephemera Large Group (Grosset & Dunlap, c. 1962-80s). Master caricaturist Kilgore's greyscale watercolor portraits of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy graced John McCabe's biographical study, Mr. Laurel & Mr. Hardy, in its first and second editions of 1962-66. Those original paintings dominate this fascinating group of artwork and pertinent memorabilia, including Kilgore's original ink logotype-cartoon for the Laurel & Hardy fan club, the Sons of the Desert. (That club owes its origins to the enthusiasm and influence of McCabe and Kilgore.) Five Kilgore originals are included -- the portraits, the logotype, a small-scale cartoon showing Stan & Ollie, and a sheaf of pencil storyboards for a proposed Laurel & Hardy cartoon film. The generous balance of the lot includes newspaper clippings, club memoranda and program booklets, biographical sheets, and production materials for a Sons of the Desert membership certificate. The artistic media include ink and opaque watercolor, on Bristol board and illustration board. Image areas range from 7" x 4.5" to 9" x 13". Light to moderate age-toning. Very Good condition.
