Description

Al Avison - Sitting on a Knitting Needle Illustration Original Art (c. 1940s). Golden Age legend Al Avison, a graduate of the Pratt Institute before turning his talents to Timely, drew this illustration of a knitting needle mishap in father's comfy chair. It appears to have been photographed for publication, but its purpose is unknown. The heavy black border across the bottom is in keeping with magazine use as header for an article, a story, or as ad copy. Despite its unclear purpose, there's a lot to appreciate here from the flowing energy of Dad's tantrum to the great facial expressions. Created in ink and wash over graphite on heavy illustration board measuring 9.5" x 6.75. Board is toned with heavy edge and handling wear. Pinholes in corners, tape residue, smudges and soiling, spot staining and slight foxing. In Very Good condition.
From the Roger Hill Collection.
