    Description

Howard Cruse "The Imprisoned Idea" Original Art (CBLDF, 1995). Most known for his ribald and cartoonesque Barefootz Funnies, Howard Cruse' work is adult in nature. Here he creates an image based on the artwork of Mike Diana. In 1994 Diana was convicted by a Florida judge for producing artwork that was deemed "harmful to adults". The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund defended Diana, and when the ruling against him came down, he worked out the court-ordered community service portion of his sentence by speaking at events about freedom of speech and expression for a non-profit organization... the CBLDF. Created in ink over graphite on 18" x 23" Bristol board. Light toning, otherwise, in Excellent condition.

    More Information:

In 1986, comic shop clerk Michael Correa was arrested and charged with selling obscene material. Publisher Dennis Kitchen spearheaded a unique project to raise money to help with Correa's legal expenses. This benefit portfolio led to the formation of the non-profit organization The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. The CBLDF helped to defend the comic industry by providing comic creators, publishers, and retailers facing prosecution with a resource for financial assistance.

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
