Henry H. Cross "Baldwin Wagon Train Under Attack" Ghost Town Painting (1898). In 1853, E. J. "Lucky" Baldwin's wagon train was attacked by Native Americans while crossing the plains on his way to California. In 1893, Baldwin commissioned renowned California artist Henry H. Cross to paint a picture according to Baldwin's description of the event. The painting was purchased by Walter Knott and displayed in Ghost Town in the early 1940s, where the original description card read "The E. J. Baldwin outfit assaulted by Indians on their overland trip to California on the Beaver River, Nevada, June 1853. Painted on the order of E. J. Baldwin 1893/H. H. Cross Artist 1837-1918." The massive painting is 129" x 91" in a magnificent frame decorated with acorns. Henry Cross was called "the greatest painter of Indians portraiture of all times" by Buffalo Bill Cody; he worked as an artist for P. T. Barnum's circus and made trips into Indian Country on his own to sketch and paint Native Americans and animal life, as well as cavalrymen and scouts. He was known for his portraits of Kit Carson, Wild Bill Hickok, Sitting Bull, and Sioux chief Red Cloud. This painting and its origin were outlined in the first issue of the Knott's Berry Farm newspaper, the Ghost Town News. A very important painting from the Ghost Town collection!
