Harold Gray Little Orphan Annie Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 11-6-66 (Chicago Tribune Syndicate, 1966). As many death-traps as Oliver Warbucks has survived since the 1920s, one might think Gray would have worn out the device by the 1960s. No such thing: Each new assault on "Daddy" Warbucks, each seeming bereavement for his ward, Annie, only brought out Gray's most ferocious storytelling instincts. This spectacular example involves an explosion and a landslide -- and a hair's-breadth escape for Annie. A brilliant example of a peak period for a classic comic strip, and a rare one, too, inasmuch as most of Gray's surviving originals have landed in academic collections. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 25.5" x 17". Each panel has been glued to a backing page (a syndicate custom), with the results of residue, staining, and one loosened panel (lower left). Good condition. From the Ray Edw Collection.
