Harold Gray Little Orphan Annie Daily Comic Strip Original Art Group of 4 (News Syndicate Co., Inc., 1967). Gray was at his best when skewering the petty hypocrisies that course through any community -- a vital narrative combination of cynicism and empathy. This extended gossip-fest stems from a continuity involving an outbreak of vandalism and its aftermath. Gray, his life expectancy reduced by now to an any-day-now proposition, had intended to "die in harness" (i.e., while working) and in the process to put a formal end to the long-running feature. He ended up by working as diligently in his last year as he had at the beginning, although the syndicate insisted upon continuing Annie under various successors. Title character Annie Warbucks is absent from this array. The dates are 11-20, 11-21, 11-22, and 11-23, all in 1967. Unusual to find such a generous batch of Gray originals, given the overall scarcity of such pieces. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 21" x 6.25". Moderate toning, scattered spot-staining, and edge-scuffing/handling wear; the art itself is in Very Good condition. From the Tex Blaisdell Archives.
