Hal Foster Tarzan Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 4-9-33 (United Feature Syndicate, 1933). Hal Foster took over the art chores for the Tarzan Sunday page from artist Rex Maxon in September, 1931. The earliest Foster page known to exist is dated July 10, 1932, and during this period Foster started to grow into his own on the strip. These early pages are filled with action, and rarely will you see a figure duplicated, as was common with other artists. Foster could draw Tarzan in any position, in any action, and it looked real. Most collectors agree that he reached his peak on Tarzan in this storyline, which has become known as the "Egyptian Sequence". It took Tarzan to a lost Egyptian civilization that bordered the jungle. That way, Foster could fill his pages with the pomp and pageantry of the Egyptian kings and princesses, and then cut to nearby action with apes in the jungle. It was the best of both worlds. This 1933 Sunday page from that storyline features Tarzan rescuing the Egyptian princess from both Numa the Lion and Ptok the Ape, only to have Ptok recapture her at the end... all in the space of 11 panels! The art is in ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of approximately 20" x 22". The page is tanned with margins trimmed close to the borders, and some small rips and handling wear in the side margins, otherwise in Very Good condition. From the Al Williamson Collection.
