Hal Foster Prince Valiant Sunday Comic Strip Wedding of Val and Aleta Hand-Colored Panel Original Art dated 2-10-46 (King Features Syndicate, 1946). After courting the lovely Aleta for a twenty-month sequence, Val wins his bride in this absolutely stunning oversized panel. Beautiful artwork has always been the hallmark of this beloved and time-honored strip, but artist Hal Foster really outdid himself with this breathtaking image of the wedding party, forced to hold their ceremony deep in the woods. As was his practice, Foster would on occasion cut a memorable panel out from a page and gift it to a fan or friend; in this case, the friend was celebrated newspaper columnist and sports cartoonist Arthur "Bugs" Baer (1886-1969), who earned his nickname by featuring an insect-like character named Bugs in his cartoons for the Washington Times. The art has remained with the Baer family all these years, and has never been offered to the public before now.
The huge panel is in ink over graphite with added watercolor on Bristol board, with an approximate image area of 16" x 22.25", and is matted and framed with Plexiglas for an overall size of 24.75" x 30.75". The art was carefully removed from the frame for inspection; there's a slight bit of handling wear along the outer edges of the artboard, but the image area remains in Excellent condition.
As the art came to Mr. Baer fully colored as shown, and was a personal gift directly from the artist (who left a small area uncolored for his inscription), we believe Foster added the color himself. For any true Prince Valiant aficionado, this is perhaps a once-in-a-lifetime chance to own one of the most significant images from the comic strip's long run. It's also one of the most attractive pieces of Foster art we have seen in nearly 15 years of major comic art auctions; all it takes is one look in person to agree -- and to fall in love!
