Hal Foster Prince Valiant Sunday Comic Strip #136 Original Art dated 9-17-39 (King Features Syndicate, 1939). Hal Foster was elected to membership in Great Britain's Royal Society of Arts -- an honor very few Americans can claim. The Duke of Windsor called Prince Valiant the "greatest contribution to English literature in the past hundred years." The strip, one of the most successful adventure series of all time, won the prestigious Banshees' Silver Lady award in 1952, and the National Cartoonists Society's Reuben award in 1957. Foster's magnificent draftsmanship shines in Prince Valiant Sunday #136. This rare, early episode hails from only the fifteenth story arc, "The Legion of the Hun-Hunters," and it's brimming with fine figure drawing and detailed period set-pieces. A special added treat are the four portraits of "Val's Lieutenants" at each corner of the strip. The image area of the entire Sunday measures approximately 26" x 34.5", and each incredibly detailed panel measures approximately 8" x 10". The page was cut between each panel tier. The art has been professionally restored and conserved (with overall paper aging and staining lightened, and areas of creasing flattened), and the title lettering is a recent replacement. This spectacular episode presents in Very Good condition. A vintage copy of the printed comic strip is included with this lot.
