Gilbert Shelton The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers #1 "Mystery Drugs" 1-Page Story Original Art (Rip Off Press, 1971). Each generation has their own favorite comedy team. Gallagher and Shean, Laurel and Hardy, the Marx Brothers, Abbott and Costello, Martin and Lewis, the Groundlings... the list goes on and on. For the Hippie Generation of the late 1960s and early 70s, that beloved team was the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers. As with many of the stories in this first compilation, this story first appeared in the pages of the 1968 underground newspapers throughout the country. The drug-addled exploits of Freewheelin' Franklin, Phineas, and Fat Freddy have been entertaining free-thinking readers ever since; their collected adventures have consistently been best sellers in head shops all over the country. Here's a prime one-page strip from the very first issue of the series, centered on the revolving theme of dope (or lack of it), with Freddy as the sap who tries to go it alone. Brilliant stuff! The art is in ink and whiteout over light graphite on Bristol board, with a large image area measuring approximately 13.25" x 18.25". There's a slight bit of handling wear; otherwise, the condition is Excellent. Mr. Shelton added his signature in graphite in the lower right border. This page is featured in the museum catalog book, Underground Classics: The Transformation of Comics into Comix. From the Eric Sack Collection.
