    Description

Gilbert Shelton Skull Comics #2 Cover Original Art (Last Gasp, 1970). It's no secret that many of the best Underground Comix artists of the 1960s and 70s were profoundly influenced by EC's 1950s line of Horror titles like Tales From the Crypt. Among these admirers was Texas-born artist/writer/musician Gilbert Shelton, best-known as the creator of the wildly popular Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers. In addition to Shelton's illustration of booze-swilling Skull Bikers, other artists from this issue contributed the cameo insert art along the left side: Jaxon (Jack Jackson), Richard Corben, Greg Irons, and Dave Sheridan. The combined art is in ink, whiteout, and Zipatone shading film over graphite on illustration board, with the insert pieces done on thin Bristol and pasted into position. The combined image area is approximately 12.5" x 17.5". The condition is Very Good with handing wear; Jaxon's "Chicken Itza" insert piece has some rubber cement staining as well. Note the "Rip Off Press" hand-drawn logo in the bottom left corner; Shelton was one of Rip Off's principal artists, and he probably did this with the assumption his company would be the publisher (the printed version includes a Last Gasp logo in its place). An Underground Classic! From the Eric Sack Collection.

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
