Gilbert Shelton and Dave Sheridan The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers #4 Cover Original Art (Rip Off Press, 1975). The Brothers are snorting coke while waiting in line for the Welfare Office to open in this colorful cover art from one of the most popular Underground Comix series of all time. They're all here: Freewheelin' Franklin, Phineas, Fat Freddy, and in a insert, a top hat-wearing Fat Freddy's Cat. Texas-born artist Gilbert Shelton was by this time working with the late Dave Sheridan (1943-1982) for a sure-fire team that delivered the goods to fun-loving fans everywhere. The Freak Brothers comics remained in print for many years, long after many like-minded Undergrounds disappeared from head shops, and for good reason -- they read like a modern-day, dope-laced Marx Brothers movie! This mixed-media (primarily ink with watercolor or color inks) page in on board or paper with an approximate image area of 12" x 16.5", matted and framed with glass for an overall size of 19" x 25". The art is entirely hand-drawn, no stats. Finding original art pages from this megapopular series is pretty tough; finding the art for a cover is just about impossible, and finding a cover originally created in color instead of just pen and ink is absolutely unique! This one was featured on page 27 of the 2009 museum catalog book Underground Classics: The Transformation of Comics Into Comix by James Danky and Denis Kitchen. Excellent condition. From the Eric Sack Collection.
