    Description

Gil Kane - Blackmark Pin-Up Original Art (undated). Gil Kane's Blackmark sits tall in the saddle, ready for battle. Blackmark was Gil's attempt to stretch the medium of graphic storytelling with a new format; he had convinced the Chairman of Bantam Books to back Blackmark as a series of extended comic book novels. Daniel Herman outlines the project in his book Gil Kane the Art of Comics, "Blackmark was a story set in the post apocalyptic future, when society had disintegrated into chaos. Man occupied an earth beset by mutants where science was feared and outlawed. The hero of the story, Blackmark, is conceived with the help of science and given his destiny while still unborn. Blackmark is an amalgam of all Kane's favorite themes." The drawing has an image area of 11.5" x 17.5". The art has a one inch tear at the upper border, and a light crease, horizontally, halfway down the page; otherwise the art is in Very Good condition. From the collection of Richard and Wendy Pini. Richard says: "I knew of Gil Kane's work long before I knew who Gil Kane was, via DC comics from the 1960s that he worked on. His violent vision in His Name Is Savage was very disturbing to me -- I didn't know comic book artists could do such things! When I found this perfect portrait of his then-latest effort, Blackmark, I knew I had found the example of Kane art I'd been looking for."
