George Papp Adventure Comics #274 Superboy Story Page 7 Original Art (DC Comics, 1960). Six years after the Comics Code Authority had made horror a taboo genre, the Code-compliant Superman series and its spinoffs continued to slip horrific monster yarns into print. The Superboy stories, in particular, dealt in ghastly torments with subversive regularity -- on condition that the terrors end with a make-nice finale. Here, Superboy plays host to a Yeti-type creature, capable of turning to stone various pillars of Smallville society. Turns out the bug-eyed Bigfoot is an interstellar cop, dispensing capital punishment on the spot to a circle of disguised alien murderers. Strange, too, that writer Robert Bernstein makes Superboy complicit, glossing over the hero's anti-killing code. Papp, the midcentury's definitive Superboy artist, renders the situation all the creepier with characteristically mild understatement. The Zero Tolerance executions foreshadow Adventure Comics' merciless and controversial Spectre series by some 15 years. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 13" x 19". Faint toning. Editorial markings in margins. Excellent condition.
