George Herriman Archy Does His Part Interior Illustration Original Art (Doubleday Publ., 1935). "...and the kings of Babylon ... are covered in fleas." Herriman's brilliance ranges far beyond his most famous feature, the surreal and poetic Krazy Kat. This gem issues from the first anthology of Don Marquis' New York newspaper columns about a philosophical cockroach -- the text comes from a roach-poem called "Prophecies." The classic Herriman style is irresistible in its detailed density of composition. Ink over graphite on Bristol board, with paper-clip indentations. Image area, 6" x 9".
