George Herriman Krazy Kat Specialty Illustrations Original Art (c. 1933). Two fantastic pieces of original art by George Herriman showcasing his zany sense of humor. The top piece features the main characters from his iconic comic strip Krazy Kat... Krazy, Ignatz the Mouse, and Offisa Pupp. The character's dialog are all puns on framing art. An interesting note, the Elephant Feet formation in the background of this, and many comic strip episodes, is an actual formation in the very real Coconino County of Arizona. Matted below this impressive 21" x 18.5" piece is a much smaller 6" x 3.5" hand-drawn and colored image that features a comical self-portrait and is addressed to P. J. Bachmann, with a personalized message and signature. This gag also has a "framed art" theme, as Bachmann was an art framer and may well have provided this wonderful matting and frame job. It is dated July of 1933. These pieces are produced in ink with watercolors and matted together to 29" x 28". The matting itself has hand-drafted lines and color making it a very attractive art deco style piece. There is light tanning and very minor stains on the edges of the mat, with a corner chip. There is also a 2" rip in the bottom left interior corner of the mat, however the original art is unaffected. Overall in Very Good condition.
