George Herriman - Krazy Kat Specialty Illustration Original Art (1937). The special allure of Krazy Kat is difficult to describe to those who simply "don't get it," but for those who cherish this man's work (and there are many well-known and important fans), here's something amazing; George Herriman would, on occasion, create large specialty art pieces for important friends and selected fans, including this image of the three main characters in his strip -- Officer Pupp, Krazy Kat (here seen singing a song and playing a stringed instrument) and Ignatz the Mouse (with brick in hand, of course). The three are set against a dream-like setting, similar to the Monument Valley vistas of Arizona that Herriman loved, with large rock formations and strange potted plants, all within a special Herriman hand-decorated and custom-cut mat. Within the mat, under the art, is a cut area in the shape of a Star of David; inside is an inscription, "To Freda Bartels mit luff und dewotion from Herriman 1937." The art is in ink and watercolor on illustration board, with an approximate image area of 19" x 14", and the overall size of the framed piece (in an old custom-built painted wooden frame, built by Herriman himself, with Plexiglas added later to protect the artwork) is approximately 32" x 30.5". The frame shows its age and the mat has a few minor stains, but the artwork remains in Excellent condition. This piece remained with the Bartels family until 2000, when it was sold in a Sotheby's auction; it's been with one collector until now.
If the magical world of Coconino County calls to you, here is your first-class ticket!
