    Description

Gene Ahern Our Boarding House with Major Hoople Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 5-8-32 (NEA Service, Inc., 1932). Two tiers add up to one whopping spread, nearly two feet in width. The antihero of the piece is the original Major Amos Hoople, a windbag who might make Baron Munchausen seem a piker. Here, Hoople's attempt to rig a fishing contest backfires in a humiliating way. Hoople's nephew, Alvin, is unexpectedly respectful -- in later years, under other writer-artists, the kid would address the Major as "Uncle Bulgy." Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Partially hand-tinted, probably by Ahern his ownself. Combined image area, 23" x 22". Moderate toning and scuffing. Very Good condition. From the Jack Kent Collection.
