    Description

Frank Springer Brain Boy #5 Complete 4-Page Story "The Strange Mr. Ozymandias" Original Art (Dell Publ., 1963). Dell's answer to DC Comics' Superboy, the Brain Boy superhero series also featured an array of weird backups that qualify as horror-fantasy pieces: Dell could persist with the creepier business in defiance of the Comics Code censors -- simply because Dell never had bought into the Code, in the first place. This richly conceived piece showcases Mike Ozymandias, an American master of "the highest order of [Asian] mystic power," who had anticipated Marvel Comics' Doctor Strange series by a year. Artist Springer walked a fine line between mainstream comics and the Underground Comix movement (with the Phoebe Zeit-Geist stories in Evergreen Review) before settling in at Marvel on Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., and then heading back into the semi-Underground at National Lampoon. This "Ozymandias" piece captures Springer at a crucial early stage as a disciple of the great Milton Caniff. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 12.25" x 17.5". Excellent condition, with a loosened title-page logotype and light-to-moderate toning.
