    Description

Floyd Gottfredson Mickey Mouse Western Painting "The Race For Riches" Original Art (Walt Disney, 1980). This magnificent and famous (and large) painting of Mickey Mouse and Horace Horsecollar, ambushed at a watering hole by evil nemesis Peg-Leg Pete and his evil companion Eli Squinch, was part of a series of 24 paintings originally commissioned by Malcolm Willits. They were the only full-scene Mickey Mouse paintings that Floyd Gottfredson, artist on the character for an amazing 40 years, ever did. There was something about the classic Western "shoot out" confrontation that set this one apart. It represented all the Mickey Mouse adventures in one perfectly conceived and executed painting. Gottfredson's popular "Race For Riches" Western story went from the 1938 Big Little Book, to the newspaper comic strips, to comic books (all by Floyd) to this large 21" x 16" painting, created with opaque watercolors on illustration board. The painting has been professionally matted and housed in an ornate frame (without glass), measuring 33" x 28". This exceptional piece has set auction records the few times it has been sold, including a Christie's 1986 auction ($32,890 with Buyer's Premium), and in a 2004 Heritage auction ($66,125, including Buyer's Premium). The painting is in Excellent condition. From the Kerby Confer Collection.
