Ernie Bushmiller Nancy Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 6-1-44 (United Feature Syndicate, 1944). Let's say Bushmiller has heard enough of those annoying radio commercials about the "large economy-size" soap, toothpaste, or whatever -- a popular advertising slogan, back then. So the ever-practical cartoonist hauls off and invents the ultimate "large economy size" package for his leading man, Sluggo Smith, to carry right past the window of Nancy Ritz. Oops -- gave away the punchline prematurely. But that's okay, inasmuch as Bushmiller's punchlines are designed to register in three seconds or less. Bushmiller knew a good gag when he saw it, and he saw bizarre humor in objects that few other gagmen would have noticed. Note the knife-scratching on the Zipatone dot-film (Panel 4) to create white highlights. Also note that Sluggo is still speaking at this early stage in his Brooklynese dialect. Ink and Zip film over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 19" x 5". Lightly toned, with marginal smudging and an over-toned paste-in signature strip. Very Good condition.
