Dick Giordano Sarge Steel #10 Hand-Tinted Splash Page Original Art (Charlton Comics, 1964). As an editor/artist at Charlton, Giordano was ready for big-time DC Comics before DC realized it was ready for Giordano. This splendid page dates from shortly before Giordano became executive editor at Charlton. (He would make the industry-changing move to DC in 1968, bringing with him a wealth of Charlton talent.) Classic hard-boiled crime melodrama, here, with a tough protagonist, an endangered beauty, and plenty of ballistical gunplay. Though better known as an inker of others' work, Giordano as a turn-key artist ranks in a class with Neal Adams and Alex Raymond. Giordano's post-publication hand-coloring job employs an astonishing tonal range. Signed in image area. Accompanied by a color-copier reproduction of another (published) page from the same story. Ink over graphite, with chemical dyes, on Bristol board. Image area, 12" x 18". The reverse contains adhesive residue. Excellent condition.
