Dick Ayers The Rawhide Kid #37 Story Page 18 Original Art (Marvel Comics, 1963). A couple of generations removed from such Marvel heroes as Spider-Man and the Hulk -- and yet appearing simultaneously in print -- the Rawhide Kid lends historical depth to the Marvel mythology. The finale of this episode finds the Kid unmasking a varmint called the Rattler, exposing him as a circus ringmaster. No, not the Ringmaster who would figure in the 1960s' adventures of the Hulk and his fellow world-beaters, but an ancestral or foreshadowing figure. The Kid also trades fair-play apologies with a falsely accused frontiersman. The 'way-out-West ringmaster appeared about a year after Hulk #3 had introduced the modern-day Ringmaster. (Jack Kirby and Dick Ayers modeled the Ringmaster after Vincent Price's character in a 1959 movie, The Big Circus.) Twice-up scale in ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 12.5" x 18.5". Signed by Ayers at lower margin. Excellent condition.
