    Description

Dale Messick Brenda Starr Reporter Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 9-13-42 1 Episode in 2 Pieces (Chicago Tribune Syndicate, 1942). A wartime blackout test challenges Messick to make a daring experiment in light-and-shadow design: Much of this episode is rendered in Chinese White watercolor on black backgrounds -- to captivating effect. Better yet, Messick conforms the writing to match the negative-image configuration, with welcome bits of wordplay. Brilliantly conceived and executed, with especially rich characterizing touches in terse snatches of dialogue. The sequence consists of two equal-size slabs of illustration board (meant to be stacked for reproduction), containing individual panels in correct sequence. The cumulative image area is approximately 19" x 27". There is some staining, but otherwise the elements are in Very Good condition.
