DescriptionDale Messick Brenda Starr, Reporter Comic Strip Original Art dated 3-19-44 (Chicago Tribute Syndicate, 1944).
Sabotage stalks the shipyards as Brenda Starr investigates a mysterious explosion that might pertain to an imminent launch. The urgent wartime episode is distinguished further by Messick's post-publication job of vivid hand-coloring. High adventure couples nicely with a humorous tone of voice, with vivid supporting characters and snappy dialogue. A pleasing touch is the use of Leroy Method stencil-lettering, an architectural tool that adapted well to comics production. Ink and rich wet-brush watercolor embellishments over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 28" x 12.5". Light toning. Otherwise in Excellent condition.
