    Description

Curt Swan and George Klein Superboy #113 Cover Original Art (DC, 1964). One of the earliest DC covers by Swan that Heritage has offered to date. Time travel was a hot topic among American youth in the early-mid 1960s, largely due to the fantastic George Pal-produced feature film, The Time Machine. Little wonder then that this issue of Superboy proclaimed itself an "All Time-Travel Issue," showing the Boy of Steel discovering a perfect image of himself from 800 years ago. Better do your flying counter-clockwise around the Earth thing and check it out, Superboy! Seeing this Curt Swan masterpiece up close and personal is kind of like traveling back in time for fans of Silver Age DC comics. Swan's art had just the perfect balance between photo realism and cartoonish comic book art, and the kids ate it up in DC's Superman Family titles like this, especially as inked by the great George Klein. The art is in ink over graphite on Sparta Bristol board, with an approximate image area of 12.5" x 18.5". The board has been professionally cleaned and restored, with part of the Superboy logo lettering and all word balloons and caption boxes expertly replaced; there's a barely noticeable horizontal fold crease though the middle of the image and a minor amount of handling wear, but that hardly takes away from this splendid piece of art. Restored to Very Good condition overall.

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
