DescriptionWilliam Stout Weird Trips #2 Cover Original Art (Kitchen Sink Press, 1978). Stout offers an unnerving, lifelike portrait of Ed Gein, the serial murderer and practicing cannibal whose crimes provided the backhanded inspiration for Robert Bloch's Psycho and Tobe Hooper's The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, among others (Stout and Hooper would work together, during the 1980s). This piece -- itself inspired by EC Comics' horror titles -- also demonstrates an abundance of grim humor: Note the copy of Gray's Anatomy at lower right; the face of EC's Old Witch character (from The Haunt of Fear); and a nod to Stout's artist pal Bernie Wrightson at lower left, just behind the signature. There are textural details here that are not evident in the fully colored published version. Ink over graphite on Bristol board, with Zipatone shading in two patterns. An image area of 11.5" x 16", matted to 17.5" x 20". Excellent condition.
