    Description

Whitman Artist Yogi Bear Frame Tray Puzzle #4420 Box Cover and Jigsaw Original Art (Whitman Publishing, 1961). Pogo Sticks were a recurring motif in the Whitman puzzles -- often involving a cartoon character too tall to be Pogo-ing about. Here's it's Yogi Bear who takes a head-bumping while his diminutive pal Boo-Boo navigates the space with ease (Whitman's Rocky & Bullwinkle puzzle subjects Bullwinkle J. Moose to a similar indignity). Lively, delicately shaded scene suggests a Disneyfied stylistic influence -- down the finer point of a very Disney-like chipmunk (upper right). Accompanied by the published puzzle, which contains a strange, therapeutic text-box: "For Developing Coordination and Motor Control." Funny -- we thought the things were designed to play with. Tempera paints and wax-pencil highlights with airbrush shading on illustration board. The mage area of 12" x 16" is matted to 16.5" x 22". Excellent condition.
