DescriptionVaughn Bode - The East Village Other Cover Original Art (East Village Other, 1968). The formative years of Vaughn Bode's career were spent in advertising. Finding the atmosphere stifling, he submitted work to The East Village Other, a New York underground newspaper that was publishing the early works of Robert Crumb and Spain Rodriguez, among others. This resulted in the creation of an all-comics underground paper, the Gothic Blimp Works, and Bode became its editor. Bode's highly individual approach to graphic design helped to jump start his plunge into the underground comix scene. This cover illustration from October 25, 1968 shows a more political side to Bode's work, with a nudge in the side of America during the Vietnam War. Measuring 8" x 14", it includes the original title type paste-up. There are some tape stains under the masthead, and a small ink stain in the flag, otherwise this idiosyncratic image is in Very Good condition. This startling image is from an extremely scarce vintage, few Bode pieces from the earliest days of his career have been offered in the marketplace -- here's your chance to own a showpiece of underground comix history!
