Vaughn Bodé East Village Other Cover Original Art 10-19-68 (East Village Other, 1968). The times, they were 'a changing. In 1968, the war in Vietnam was looming large in the minds of many young men, and opposition to this bloody conflict was growing rapidly. The gung-ho spirit so prevalent from the time of World War II had all but vanished, except in the minds of those too old to be drafted, and the Generation Gap was in full swing. Protest to the war was made public in many ways, including the so-called "free press" papers being published in New York, San Francisco, and a few other large cities. The East Village Other was one of the first of the "hippie" publications, printing a variety of news of the day, Underground Comix, and ads for record stores and escort services. Despite the somewhat seedy nature, these papers held a big influence, and helped turn the public's opinion on the war. This infamous cover of a mother not unlike Whistler's, sewing young solders to a flag, came from one of the most talented Underground artist of the time, the late Vaughn Bodé. The art is in ink and marker on paper, with an image area of approximately 10.5" x 16". The masthead is a paste-up on newsprint. The date of October 25, 1968, was changed, and the cover was used the week earlier. In Very Good condition, with a few small water spots and tape stains.
